This is the second half of a two-part lecture on emotions in Paul Bloom's Introduction to Psychology. The first half covered fear and the bond between parents and children; this lecture opens by finishing that topic, then asks a harder evolutionary question: why are animals, including humans, often nice to creatures they are not related to at all?

By the end you can explain the evidence for infant attachment (and why it is not about a single imprinting moment), describe how emotions like gratitude and anger function as tools for detecting and punishing cheaters in cooperative relationships, and explain how a "culture of honor" produces higher rates of honor-related violence without raising the overall crime rate.

Key ideas

  • Attachment develops gradually: babies bond with whoever is closest and most responsive to them; there is no magical imprinting window, contrary to older folk theories.

Emotional responses to caregivers and kin (0:00)

The lecture opens with a question from the previous class about whether nonhuman primates have as many distinct smiles as humans; the answer, from an expert Bloom consulted, is that primate smiles mostly function as appeasement signals rather than greetings or genuine happiness. Bloom then returns to parental attachment, using footage from March of the Penguins to illustrate how elaborate, apparently instinctive parenting behavior can be in a species with a long period of offspring dependence. He reviews Harlow's wire-mother and cloth-mother experiments, which separate feeding from comfort and show that infant monkeys attach emotionally to whichever source of comfort is present rather than to the food source. He also covers Harlow's studies of monkeys raised in total isolation, which produced severe social and emotional deficits, and notes that early intervention (introducing a younger, socially active monkey) could partly reverse the damage.

Question and answer on emotions towards kin (15:44)

Students ask whether children in orphanages comfort one another and what "middle ground" parenting (present but not very affectionate) does to development. Bloom notes there is little evidence of major effects outside extreme deprivation, and that it is hard to separate genetic from environmental explanations when affectionate parents have affectionate children.

Evolutionary explanations for emotional responses (18:14)

The lecture shifts from kin bonds, which are relatively easy to explain through gene survival, to the harder puzzle of niceness toward non-kin. Examples include grooming, warning cries, shared childcare, and vampire bats regurgitating blood to feed hungry colony members. This is framed as reciprocal altruism, and Bloom explains the cheater/free-rider problem: since defecting is individually advantageous, cooperation requires cheater detection, which experiments show vampire bats actually practice by withholding food from bats that previously refused to share.

Cooperative behavior and the Prisoner's Dilemma (25:20)

Bloom explains the classic Prisoner's Dilemma structure, where defection is the dominant strategy for each individual player even though mutual cooperation produces the best joint outcome. He runs the game live with students using paper cards, then describes Robert Axelrod's computer tournament, where Anatol Rapoport's simple Tit-for-Tat program beat sixty-two more complex competitors by starting cooperative, retaliating against defection, and forgiving afterward. He connects this to emotions: liking cooperators, distrusting betrayers, and feeling guilt after betraying someone are framed as motivational systems matching the payoff structure of the game.

The Ultimatum Game, rationality and irrationality (40:43)

Students play the Ultimatum Game, where one player proposes a split of ten dollars and the other can accept or reject it (rejecting means neither gets anything). Purely rational responders should accept any nonzero offer, but people routinely reject low offers out of spite, and proposers anticipate this by offering more than the rational minimum. Bloom uses this to argue that a reputation for irrationality — refusing bad deals, or having a temper — can be socially advantageous because it deters others from taking advantage of you, and connects this to research on love and on the adaptive role of anger in provoked violence.

Cultures of honor (49:20)

The lecture closes by discussing "cultures of honor," which sociologists argue emerge where law enforcement is weak and valuable resources (like livestock) are easy to steal, making a reputation for violent retaliation valuable. Bloom describes Nisbett and Cohen's research comparing the American South and North, including survey differences in attitudes toward violence and a striking field experiment where a research assistant bumped into male students and insulted them, finding that Southern participants showed larger stress-hormone increases than Northern participants, without an overall difference in crime rates.
